You probably have had the backstory of Lana Del Rey crammed forcefully down your throat from most media outlets, so lets focus on her mediocre album instead. Essentially most of the songs boil down to overly dramatic strings dominating drum beats and loops with occasional other instrumentation hidden in the mix. As most songs seem to follow this pattern there’s little room for variation and it all seems to blend together. Lana’s voice itself is ok, and she can clearly belt a tune if given the chance, but the songs are far too weak to truly let her showcase it. Also on a lot of the songs she seems to slip into a semi-rap, which whilst nice the first time on “Off To The Races”, quickly becomes irritating. As it stands, “Video Games” is the only genuinely brilliant song here, with one or two stragglers that are passable. Otherwise, it barely passes as average. 4.5/10
